NIBCO LCS-6822 & LCS-7822: High Performance Butterfly Valve Overview

Published: Jul 09, 2026 By: Lucas Gasparotto

Learn how NIBCO LCS-6822 and LCS-7822 high-performance butterfly valves compare by pressure class, materials, applications, sizing, actuation, and installation.

When a system demands reliable isolation across a wide range of pressures and temperatures, the NIBCO high-performance butterfly valve is one of the most trusted solutions for commercial, industrial, and mechanical HVAC applications.

The LCS-6822 (Class 150) and LCS-7822 (Class 300) are the two flagship models in NIBCO's HPBFV lineup, sharing the same robust carbon-steel body and stainless-steel trim construction and differing primarily in their pressure ratings.

This guide covers how they work, how they're built, where each model fits, and what you need to know before replacing or installing one.

High-Performance Butterfly Valves

To understand what makes the NIBCO LCS-6822 and LCS-7822 high-performance butterfly valves, it helps to first look at how a standard butterfly valve works.

A standard butterfly valve controls flow with a disc that rotates 90 degrees inside the pipe bore. In the fully open position, the disc sits parallel to the flow, allowing media to pass through with relatively low restriction. When the valve is closed, the disc rotates into the seat to stop flow.

Standard butterfly valves use a concentric design, where the stem, disc, and seat are all centered on the same axis. It's the most common, simple, and economical type used in low-pressure HVAC plumbing and utility applications.

In this arrangement, because the disc remains in contact with the seat through much of its rotation, the seat experiences continuous rubbing or sliding friction each time the valve opens and closes. This repeated contact can increase seat wear, raise operating torque, and reduce sealing consistency - especially in systems with higher pressure, higher temperature swings, or frequent cycling.

What Makes These Models High-performance?

High-performance butterfly valves are designed to solve these limitations. Instead of a basic concentric layout, the NIBCO LCS-6822 and LCS-7822 use a dual-offset disc design, along with upgraded sealing, packing, and stem safety features.

These design differences (listed below) allow the valve to provide tighter shutoff, reduced seat wear, lower operating torque, and better performance in demanding commercial, industrial, and mechanical HVAC systems.

Dual Offset Design

Both LCS models incorporate a dual-offset disc in their design. The main characteristic is the disc's shaft, offset from both the bore centerline and the seat centerline.

It moves the disc away from the seat as soon as it begins to open, eliminating the sliding contact that causes seat wear compared to concentric designs.

The result is a tighter seal over the life of the valve, reduced operating torque, and the ability to handle higher pressures without seat deformation.

Live Loaded Adjustable Packing

NIBCO LCS Butterfly valves include a live-loaded adjustable packing system. This design maintains constant gland loading on the PTFE packing, compensating for thermal cycling and minor wear without requiring routine manual adjustment.

It's a significant design advantage over standard butterfly valves, and it's particularly handy for systems that experience wide temperature swings or frequent cycling.

Blow-Out Proof Stem

The one-piece stainless steel stem is secured against blow-out in accordance with API-609 requirements. Even under full system pressure, the stem cannot be ejected from the body - an essential safety feature for the pressure classes these valves operate in.

LCS-6822 vs. LCS-7822 - Understanding the Difference

The NIBCO LCS-6822 and LCS-7822 are mechanically identical in construction, as we will see further - same body material, same disc, same stem, same seat, same packing system.

The core difference is the ANSI pressure class they are built to, which determines their rated working pressure, flange drilling pattern, and available size range.

LCS-6822 - ANSI Class 150

The LCS-6822 is rated to ANSI Class 150, with a maximum cold working pressure of 285 PSI at temperatures up to 100°F. It is available in sizes from 2" through 30", making it the right choice for most commercial HVAC systems - chilled water, heating hot water, condenser water, glycol, and low-pressure steam service.

Class 150 flange drilling is the most common in commercial mechanical work, so the LCS-6822 drops directly into most existing piping configurations without modification.

LCS-7822 - ANSI Class 300

The LCS-7822 is rated to ANSI Class 300, with a maximum cold working pressure of 740 PSI at temperatures up to 100°F. It covers sizes from 2" through 24" and is designed for higher-pressure industrial and process applications where the Class 150 rating would not be adequate.

The heavier flange drilling of the Class 300 requires matching flanges in the piping system.

Note: For steam service from 2" to 12", both models are rated to 150 PSI for on/off duty and 50 PSI for modulating service. For severe steam applications beyond these parameters, consult the Liberty Supply sales team.

General Installation Guidelines

The following section covers the most important installation considerations for the LCS-6822 and LCS-7822.

Storage & Handling

  • Valves are shipped individually boxed through 12"; 14" and larger are shipped with faces covered.
  • The disc is shipped in the nearly closed position to protect the sealing edge.
  • Store valves indoors at 40°F to 90°F.

Positioning

  • The valve can be installed in any horizontal or vertical position.
  • Where a choice of stem position exists, horizontal stem orientation is preferred - it distributes disc and stem weight evenly and minimizes seat wear.
  • In abrasive media service, the horizontal stem position is strongly preferred.

Pipe and Flange Requirements

  • Valves should be installed at least six (6) pipe diameters from other line components.
  • Verify that the pipe inside diameter falls within NIBCO's minimum (disc clearance) and maximum (proper seal) ID requirements for the selected valve series and size before installation.
  • Use only ANSI Class 150 or Class 300 flanges matching the valve's class.
  • Rubber-faced or mechanical flanges are not recommended.
  • Do not weld the valve into the piping system after assembly.

Observations

  • Do not use this valve for steam service beyond the rated parameters without consulting NIBCO.
  • Lever-lock handles are not recommended on 8" and larger valves.
  • Do not install valves with an EPDM liner in compressed air lines (this applies to standard butterfly valves; the 6822/7822 use PTFE seats).
  • If installed opposite the preferred flow arrow for dead-end service, a downstream flange is recommended.
  • Never remove the collar bushing with the system under pressure.
  • Check for disc clearance with adjacent pipe ID before installing - interference can occur with heavy wall pipe, plastic-lined pipe, or as-cast fit.
