The Bell & Gossett Series e-60 is one of the most widely used in-line centrifugal pumps in commercial HVAC and hydronic systems. Whether you are specifying a new installation, replacing or troubleshooting a system that has been in service for years, this guide provides the technical information you need.

Engineers will find the specifications and material data they need for submittals. Facility managers will understand what the pump does and where it fits. Technicians and contractors will find construction details, seal options, and serviceability information relevant to installations and replacements.

This is the B&G e-60 - the modern evolution of one of the most trusted pump lines in the industry.

What Is the Bell & Gossett e-60?

The Bell and Gossett e-60 pump (also referenced as the B&G e-60, e60 pump, or Bell and Gossett e-60 inline pump) is a three-piece, flex-coupled, inline-mounted centrifugal pump designed for heating and cooling applications, potable water service, and general fluid transfer. It is a product of Bell & Gossett, a Xylem brand, and is engineered, assembled, and tested in the USA.

"Inline mounted" means the pump installs directly in the pipeline - the suction and discharge flanges are on the same centerline - eliminating the need for a separate base or floor mounting. This saves valuable mechanical room space and simplifies both initial installation and future service access.

The Series e-60 is the direct successor to the legacy Bell & Gossett Series 60, offering dimensional interchangeability that makes it a true drop-in replacement for existing installations.

Design and Construction

Three-Piece Architecture

The B&G Series 60 design heritage continues in the e-60's three-piece construction: the motor, coupler/seal assembly, and volute/impeller wet end are all separable. This is one of the most service-friendly features of the pump - the motor, coupler, mechanical seal, and impeller can all be repaired or replaced without removing the pump body from the piping. In a working mechanical room, that translates directly to less downtime and lower labor costs on service calls.

Unitized Mechanical Seal

The Series e-60 features an upgraded unitized mechanical seal - a significant improvement over older piecemeal seal assemblies. The one-piece seal simplifies replacement by eliminating the need to assemble individual seal components onto the shaft in tight, sometimes awkward conditions.

The stainless steel drive mechanism in the unitized seal design reduces torsional stress on the seal bellows. Combined with an open-seal chamber that promotes continuous fluid circulation at the seal face, the result is reduced heat buildup, improved particle removal, and a longer service life for the seal itself. Bell & Gossett describes this as "worry-free performance," and the design backs that claim.

Mechanical Seal Options

Three mechanical seal configurations are available for the Bell & Gossett e-60, covering a range of system fluid types, pH levels, and temperature requirements:

Seal Selection Seal Elastomer Seal Ring Seat Insert
EPR/Carbon/SiC (Standard) EPR Carbon Silicon
FKM/Carbon/SiC (Optional) FKM Carbon Silicon
EPR/SiC/SiC (Optional) EPR Graphite SiC Graphite SiC
Note: All seal housings are stainless steel with stainless steel springs across all three options.

Seal Selection Guidance:

  • The standard EPR/Carbon/SiC seal covers the majority of commercial HVAC hydronic applications - heating hot water, chilled water, and condenser water systems within the specified pH and glycol range.
  • The FKM option is appropriate when fluid chemistry or system treatment chemicals are incompatible with EPR elastomers. Note the reduced temperature ceiling of 225°F.
  • The EPR/SiC/SiC option offers the widest pH tolerance (up to 12.0) and is recommended for more aggressive or higher-purity fluid conditions.

Motor Options

Series e-60 Standard Motor Option

The Bell & Gossett e-60 is available with B&G power packs and C-face motors ranging from 1/3 to 3 HP at 1725 RPM. Standard enclosure is ODP (Open Drip-Proof); TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan-Cooled) is available as an option for environments requiring additional motor protection. All motor bearings are permanently lubricated with Polyrex grease, making the pump truly maintenance-free in standard operation.

Hydraulic Efficiency

The b&g e-60 is designed around industry-leading hydraulic efficiency across its nine pump sizes. Bell & Gossett highlights the pump's wide "efficiency islands" - the range of flow conditions over which the pump operates near its Best Efficiency Point (BEP). A wider efficiency island means the pump maintains strong hydraulic performance even as system load varies, which is critical in variable-flow HVAC systems

Even at operating points away from BEP, the e-60 is designed to outperform competing inline pumps - a claim supported by the pump's performance curves and its wide adoption in commercial building systems.

Replacement Compatibility: Drop-in for Legacy Series 60

One of the most practically important features of the Bell & Gossett Series 60 successor is its dimensional interchangeability. The e-60 is designed so that flange-to-flange and intake/suction dimensions are identical to equivalent legacy Series 60 models - and in many cases, comparable competitor inline pumps as well.

For facilities managing old 60 B&G series pumps, this means the B&G e-60 is a true drop-in replacement. The updated unitized seal, improved hydraulic efficiency, and available ECM motor option all come without requiring any system rework beyond removing the old unit and installing the new one.

Installation Overview

The B&G e-60 is designed for straightforward in-line installation, but there are several location, piping, orientation, and startup requirements that are worth knowing before you put the pump into service.

Pump Location

Locate the pump as close to the fluid source as possible to minimize suction piping length and friction losses. It's important to have sufficient clearance around the unit for ventilation, inspection, and maintenance/service access.

Protect the unit from weather, flooding, and freezing temperatures, and do not install over finished living space or expensive equipment without adequate drainage provisions in case of leakage.

When possible, locate the pump below the fluid level - this promotes priming, ensures a steady liquid supply, and provides positive suction head.

Piping Requirements

Pipes must not be forced with the pump connections. The Pipe hangers near the pump must independently support the suction and discharge lines to prevent strain on the pump body.

Below are the key requirements from the piping checklist:

  • A straight pipe section with at least 5 pipe diameters long must be installed between the suction side and the first elbow. Another alternative is to install a B&G Suction Diffuser to reduce turbulence entering the pump.
  • To allow pump service without draining the system, isolation valves must be installed on both the suction and discharge sides, plus a drain valve in the suction pipe.
  • It's recommended to install a Triple Duty valve on the discharge line to ensure check (water hammer protection), isolation, nd throttling valve in one.
  • Install new flange gaskets between pump and pipe flanges, they must be clean, grease-free and bolts with 8-11 ft/lbs (11-15 Nm)
  • Install fittings to absorb expansion where significant temperature swings are expected.

Pump Orientation

The e-60 can be installed to discharge up, down, left, or right. The pump body can be repositioned by removing the body bolts and rotating the body around the bearing assembly. Follow these orientation rules without exception:

  • Only install with the motor shaft horizontal.
  • The bearing assembly vent slots or coupler access window must always face up.
  • Do not reposition the motor on the bearing assembly.
  • The flow arrow on the pump body must point in the direction of flow.

Wiring

All electrical connections must be made by a certified electrician in compliance with applicable codes. Disconnect and lock out electrical power before installing or servicing. Single-phase motors include inherent overheating protection and do not require external overload protection. Three-phase motors require starters with heaters. The pump can be wired for low voltage (115V single-phase / 208–230V three-phase) or high voltage (230V single-phase / 460V three-phase) - refer to the wiring diagrams on the motor nameplate.

Startup Procedure

Before the initial equipment start-up, flush and clean the system to remove debris that could damage the seal or impeller.
The sequence below is recommended as the pump startup best pratice:

  1. Verify motor rotation by jogging the driver briefly: it should be clockwise when viewed from the back of the motor. The pump has an arrow to confirm the direction.
  2. Prime the pump: loosen the vent plugs on the pump body, rotate the shaft by hand a few times to purge air, then close the vent plugs once liquid flows steadily.
  3. Open the suction valve fully; also open any recirculation or cooling lines.
  4. Close the discharge valve, start the driver, then slowly open the discharge valve and measure to the desired operational flow rate.
  5. Check the discharge pressure gauge immediately to confirm the pump has reached the correct operating pressure.
  6. Monitor for excessive vibration, unusual noise, and bearing temperature. If any exceed normal levels, shut down and resolve before continuing.

Note: If the fluid temperature exceeds 200°F (93°C), warm up the pump before full operation by circulating a small amount of fluid until the casing is within 100°F (38°C) of the fluid temperature.

Key Operational Precautions

  • Do not throttle flow from the suction side. Regulate capacity using the discharge valve only.
  • Do not operate with blocked suction and discharge - even briefly. Trapped fluid can overheat and create an explosive pressure hazard.
  • Do not run the pump dry. The mechanical seal requires fluid for lubrication and cooling.
  • Do not expose an idle pump to freezing conditions. Drain all liquid from the pump body and any cooling lines before shutdown in cold environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the difference between the Bell & Gossett Series 60 and the Series e-60?

A

The e-60 is the updated, current-production version of the legacy Series 60. It features an upgraded unitized mechanical seal, improved hydraulic efficiency, the option for an ECM variable-speed motor, and full dimensional interchangeability with legacy Series 60 models.

Q What seal option should I specify for a closed-loop hydronic system?

A

The standard EPR/Carbon/SiC seal is appropriate for the vast majority of closed-loop hydronic heating and cooling applications. It covers temperatures up to 250°F, a pH range of 7.0–11.0, and glycol/water ratios up to 50/50. Only consider the FKM or EPR/SiC/SiC options if your system's fluid treatment program falls outside those parameters.

Q When should I specify the ECM motor option?

A

The ECM option is the right choice when variable flow control is needed - either via manual speed adjustment using the on-board dial, or through automatic control via a 0–10V DC signal from a building automation system. It is also a good choice where noise is a concern, as the ECM variant runs approximately 5% quieter than the standard induction motor.

Q What enclosure type is standard on the e-60 motor?

A

Open Drip-Proof (ODP) is standard. Totally Enclosed Fan-Cooled (TEFC) is available as an option and is recommended for outdoor installations, wet mechanical rooms, or environments with elevated dust or contamination risk.
