Grundfos Suction Diffusers are designed to improve flow conditions at the suction side of a pump while helping protect the pump from debris in the piping system. Used in commercial HVAC, hydronic heating and cooling, chilled water, condenser water, and mechanical room pump installations, suction diffusers help create a more uniform flow pattern entering the pump so the pump can operate more reliably and efficiently.
A suction diffuser combines several common pump suction-side components into one assembly. It can serve as an elbow, flow straightener, and strainer, helping reduce the need for long straight pipe runs and additional fittings ahead of the pump. The Series SD suction diffuser provides a uniform flow pattern to the suction side of the pump, helping ensure stable NPSH, and makes it possible to install pumps in narrow spaces where long bends are not practical.
Grundfos Suction Diffusers also incorporate a cylindrical strainer to help prevent impurities from entering the pump. This protects pump internals from startup debris, weld slag, pipe scale, and other particles that can damage impellers, seals, and wear surfaces. The diffuser also includes a disposable fine-mesh stainless steel startup screen for capturing foreign particulates during system startup and commissioning.
